Abstract
In recent years, the safety of Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs) in traffic has become a topic of general interest. While car manufacturers have already started integrating collision warning systems in their current models, some of them even based on Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) messages, research on solutions applicable on the VRU side is much more limited. Simulation offers a safe and repeatable environment to evaluate potential applications. However, to research V2X applications in realistic surroundings, a co-simulation setup allowing a human-in-the-loop to interact in real-time with traffic simulation and simultaneously with vehicular networking simulation is required. One of these setups is the Virtual Cycling Environment (VCE) connecting a bicycle on a training stand to the simulators SUMO and Veins. To investigate traffic interactions, the original VCE environment currently lacks the support for multiple connected bicycles at the same time. Hence, we developed an architecture or its extension that enables multiple users to interact in one connected simulation. To bridge potential communication lags, we introduced new extrapolation and convergence algorithms to our system. The different human-in-the-loop setups are connected via the internet to allow uninfluenced experiments with locally separated users as well as different geographical setup sights. We conduct a proof-of-concept to show the feasibility of internet-connected multi-user real-time simulation and highlight the systems limitations.
