Abstract
This thesis documents the development of a virtual network laboratory based on GNS3 with an integrated learning concept and assignment as a practical block for the course Communication Networks at Technische Universität Berlin. The work is motivated as part of university education to provide quality training for highly specialised academics. For this purpose, both the content and the teaching form should conform to the current state of science. This work combines the technical development of a learning environment and adapts a well-founded and recognised didactic concept of project-oriented learning to create an internship that is attractive to students. The developed practical course uses the approach of virtualizing the network hardware in order to keep the level of abstraction as low as possible but still ensure a realistic practice-oriented work. The result of this work is the VIDAR-lab (Virtual Internet Device Abstractions of Reality), which is an integrated solution for the four- hour practical course with the topic of networks and the Internet. The VIDAR-lab consists of a theoretical phase in which the necessary contents are worked through, a practical phase in which the work with the software is practised and a project phase in which the learned knowledge can be deepened in a practice-oriented way. The developed VIDAR-lab was tested and evaluated with ten volunteers. For this purpose, the volunteer students attend the theory and the practical phase and were able to give their opinions and recommendations. The Virtual Internet Device Abstractions of Reality (VIDAR)-lab is expected to be integrated into the course in the winter semester 2022/2023.
