Abstract

The demand for accurate indoor localization systems has grown significantly in recent years, with applications ranging from healthcare monitoring to security enhancement. Traditional methods relying on devices have limitations, leading to the exploration of Device-Free Indoor (DFI) localization. This work focuses on the feasibility of using Time of Flight (ToF) measurements, specifically Wi-Fi Fine Timing Measurements (FTM), for DFI localization. Our main contributions include the evaluation of multipath effects on ToF measurements and the development of a presence detection system based on these effects. We demonstrate that multipath channels alter measured ToF, and the presence of individuals in an environment induces detectable changes in multipath properties. We extend this system to reliably detect human motion in various setups. In conclusion, this work presents Wi-Fi FTM as a promising metric for DFI localization, offering similar performance to traditional Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI)-based methods. We acknowledge the need for further investi- gation to optimize bandwidth, sampling rates, and network density for improved performance. Additionally, we suggest future research directions, including the integration of machine learning and fingerprinting techniques for enhanced DFI localization using Wi-Fi FTM. This research opens doors to more advanced and precise indoor localization approaches with significant potential applications.
