Abstract
There is research effort in networking solutions with wireless signals – permeating buildings and traffic obstacles – to make cyclists more visible and warn road users to increase reaction time. The validation of the safety benefit of assistant technology requires an ethical, i.e. safe, bicycling lab simulation like TKN’s “Virtual Cycling Environment” (VCE) simulation. It integrates networking simulator Veins with traffic simulator SUMO into a real-time simulation with Godot, receiving user input from a static treadmill. The validity or “meaningfulness” of simulation results and derived statements depends on the simulation’s fidelity. However, the lab safety creates big challenges for the fidelity of user behaviour which is an important part of the simulation. Previously, the Virtual Cycling Environment showed potential for improvement, such as more a higher sense of bicycling. Therefore, I researched potential improvements and created a concept of bicycling illusion with 4 factors, integrated VR glasses, added ambient sound and sound effects, made minor visual enhancements, fixed defects, implemented user study conditions and tasks and finally conducted a user study to determine the effect of proposed variables. The conducted user study indicated mixed results which did not clearly favour the current audio integration and which encourages the usage of realistic and smooth rotations in VR cycling to counter simulator sickness. However, results could indicate an improvement in presence illusion, improved spatial presence and possibly an improvement in the steering realism in comparison to a previous study without VR. A changed Bicycling Illusion was found to correspond to a change in spatial illusion but not a change in plausibility illusion.
