Abstract

The coexistence of heterogeneous wireless technologies in the shared 2.4 GHz ISM band creates opportunities for cross-technology communication. However, communication from narrowband ZigBee devices to WiFi receivers is challenging due to fundamental differences in their physical-layer characteristics. This thesis investigates whether ZigBee waveforms can be combined to emulate WiFi packets that can be detected and decoded by an unmodified WiFi receiver. A waveform emulation framework based on sparse signal approximation is developed, in which frequency-shifted ZigBee waveforms are superposed to synthesize the individual fields of a WiFi packet. Multiple ZigBee waveforms at different center frequencies are transmitted simultaneously and superposed, with complex-valued coefficients controlling their individual amplitude and phase contributions. The ZigBee waveforms used for the superposition are selected using a receiver-driven greedy algorithm for the WiFi legacy training fields and Orthogonal Matching Pursuit for the L-SIG and Data fields. The proposed approach is evaluated through AWGN simulations and a conducted hardware experiment. The results demonstrate that emulated packets can be successfully decoded by a standard WiFi receiver, although they require a higher SNR than conventional WiFi packets. Hardware measurements confirm successful reception by a commercial WiFi receiver and reveal an additional reception penalty for the emulated packets at comparable receiver-reported RSSI, while packet delivery ratios above 0.9 are achieved under sufficiently strong received-signal conditions.
