Abstract

This tutorial aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the internet of bio-nano-things (IoBNT) framework, including its key applications, components, communication technologies, and experimental developments. IoBNT platforms facilitate the operation of nanodevices in the form of nanonetworks to support healthcare applications such as early disease detection and treatment. Due to the interdisciplinary nature, IoBNT is becoming an interesting but challenging research domain with various components. This tutorial aims to put across the communication-theoretical and experimental development of IoBNT platforms while gradually introducing the fundamentals of this topic thoroughly. We plan to describe their main components (sensors, communication technologies, networking strategies) and provide insights into the most recent testbed developments and experimental work. In this direction, we will introduce relevant communication links in environments like micro-fluidics (emulating human vessels) and air, as well as molecular communication (MC) and radio frequency (RF)-based interfaces with macro testbeds We also develop hands-on activities with simulators to introduce the operation of nanonetworks within the human body. We will illustrate software building blocks to conceive and appraise point-to-point communications in MC and electro magnetic (EM) links.
