Abstract
To improve the safety of Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs), the most endangered traffic participants, research is carried out to gather data and develop new technologies. The Virtual Cycling Environment (VCE), consisting of a visualized 3D simulation environment that can be traversed by participants from a first person perspective by interacting with a connected physical bicycle training stand, provides the possibility of carrying out research in this field. Including more road infrastructure such as street signs may introduce a higher degree of realism and more information on the traffic context for the VCE participants, that could improve the quality of the gathered data. Therefore, this thesis adds a software component to the VCE to automatically generate street signs from real world OSM map data to visualize them in the 3D simulation environment. Two different methods were used to generate the eleven considered street sign types: a non-procedural generation based on the approximate positions of the street signs indicated in the data and a procedural generation using the roads’ infrastructural properties. The developed implementation proved to generate realistically placed virtual street signs in the VCE with plausible positions and orientations for all considered sign types. However, the correct representation of the real world street signs found in the areas included in the evaluation differed based on the generation method of each sign type and the completeness of the used OSM data.
