Abstract

Emergency vehicles play a large role in the operation of public health and safety organizations. Because of the relevance of their services they assume an exceptional role in road traffic during emergency situations. Since the operation of emergency vehicles is time-sensitive and becoming more frequent, but at the same time significantly more dangerous compared to other vehicles, there is a need for more efficient routing and overall improvements. In traffic simulations like Simulation of Urban MObility (SUMO), emergency vehicle models exist to test new innovation and solutions in a simulation setting. The currently implemented model includes some relevant features, such as passing red lights and emergency corridors, but often, simulation results do not match the expected behaviour of an emergency vehicle. In this thesis, after providing an overview of the definition of emergency vehicles according to German traffic law, we show, that the model does not align with the correct procedures in some instances. Possible improvements to the model, which respect the rights and boundaries set by the legal regulations, are introduced and evaluated. In the end, it is found that these changes to the model result in more correct simulation outcomes, while simultaneously achieving quantitative performance increases, such as reducing overall travel times in some test scenarios.
