Course Outline: 3433 L 339 IV Communication in Networked Embedded Systems

Introduction
The course focuses on network architectures and protocols for Networked Embedded Systems (NES). Embedded systems play an important role in many applications, such as industrial and building automation, automotive and avionic applications, etc. Many of these applications are critical and (hard) real-time, which puts specific constraints on the design of the underlying system software and communication protocols.
Topics

  • Energy-efficient MAC protocols for sensor networks
  • Software frameworks for automotive applications (OSEK/ VDX and AUTOSAR)
  • Communication protocols for

    • Networked embedded systems in automotive (CAN and Flexray)
    • Industrial automation (PROFIBUS, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, Real-time Ethernet, PROFINET, HART and WirelessHART)
    • Building automation (EIB/KNX, LON and BACNet)

Prerequisites
BSc module „Kommunikationsnetze” or similar knowledge is required. Experience with operating systems (e.g., Linux, FreeRTOS, TinyOS, Contiki) and programming (e.g., C, C++) for embedded systems is beneficial.
Exam
IV Networked Embedded Systems: 25% class attendance and discussion, 25% topic presentations, 25% project work, 25% oral exam
