Abstract

The main task of this thesis is to develop a tool which will be capable of testing the functionality of IP multicast networks. Although parameters of the Quality of Service of existing multicast sessions should be gathered. This tool is named Multicast Quality Monitor. For the determination of the functionality of IP multicast networks a concept got introduced, the MQM Ping-Pong mechanism. This mechanism initiates the different hosts, which have an active MQM, to answer the requests of other MQMs or to send a request message to an IP multicast address. The valid timestamps of the sending process are registered in the messages, therefore all receivers of these response messages know the relevant timestamps of sending and receiving. These timestamps are used for measuring transmission times to state the quality and functionality of the IP multicast network. To define the Quality of Service of existing multicast sessions MQM contains a RTP Sniffer, who is capable of listening into active Real Time Protocol (RTP) sessions by joining a RTP session using the Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) and logging the relevant parameters. The thesis gives a short introduction to IP Multicast, to the functionality of RTP and to the basic features of the protocol. The concept and the implementation of the tool MQM is described. Finally the information of IP multicast networks and RTP streams gathered by the tool MQM are outlined graphically.
