Abstract

The idea of decentralization gains in more and more importance in the field of automation technology and the use of small distributed sensors and actuators to realize complex automation tasks attracts increasing notice in industry. The diversity of possible applications is immense and gets even larger if every single component of a system possesses location information. This thesis examines the employment of location-aware sensor/actuator networks in industrial applications. First, related work about localization technologies is presented; especially the Cricket Indoor Location System is addressed. Afterwards Cricket is used to develop a concrete application in order to investigate the applicability and performance of position determination in sensor networks within the scope of an industrial environment. The application realizes a continuous visualization of the position of a user in the range of an automation system. The region where the user is currently in is graphically indicated at the user.s portable computer as well as at the control station of the automation system. For testing purposes, the application is integrated into the SmartAutomation test bed, a realistic industrial test environment. Information about the performance of the application is provided by a lot of tests and measurements. The tests show that it is feasible to incorporate location-awareness realized by today.s location systems in the context of sensor/actuator networks in an industrial environment. Nevertheless, the accuracy, reliability and latency of the location information have to be improved to make the employment of pose-aware sensor/actuator networks reasonable in real industrial applications.
