Recently, HTTP-based adaptive streaming has become the de facto standard for video streaming over the Internet. It allows clients to dynamically adapt media characteristics to varying network conditions in order to maximize the quality of experience. As a component of Hybrid TV solutions such as HbbTV, it is one of the drivers for the evolution of the plain old linear TV network into the highly interactive and customized media delivery ecosystem of the future.

​The goal of ​ANOPAS ​is to develop​ innovative solutions for ​the​ challenges ​arising from deploying adaptive streaming in realistic network environments. It focuses on the development of adaptation algorithms, aiming at reaching the best possible playback quality​ and​ fairness between users in multi​-​user environments, live streaming with low latency and efficient operation in wireless networks.​ The developed approaches should run on various platforms such as set-top boxes and browser environments. During the course of the project, a platform-independent modular client architecture will be developed that will incorporate features such as cloud-based adaptation, cross-layer optimization, coordinated video quality selection in local area networks, support for DASH events, etc.​ ​To ensure ​interoperability, ​the project will leverage widely adopted ​standards ​such ​as MPEG-DASH, HbbTV and HTML5. The ​developed​ solutions ​will​ be imple​me​nted in prototypes and​ extensively​ evaluated in realistic scenarios.

Ziel des Projektes ist die Kombination von 2 bekannten Übertragungstechnologien: Ultra-Breitband und Cognitive Radio. Hierbei werden sogenannte spektrale Löcher zur Kommunikation verwendet. Als Basis dient eine Software-Defined-Radio-Plattform, die eine flexible Anpassung an verschiedene Übertragungsverfahren u. Standards ermöglicht.
